Newborn Session – Parent Information Sheet

Booking your newborn session:

The best time to book your session is as soon as bub has arrived safe and sound.  As we all know, babies rarely arrive when expected.  For this reason, I always keep a few days a week available for newborns for your session.

It’s a good idea to add me to the list of people that you’ll text/email with the ‘new arrival’ announcement so that we can confirm your session as soon as possible. There’s a fairly short window of opportunity available to successfully achieve the desired sleepy, curled-up poses, so we need to make sure we don’t miss it.

Ideally, newborns should be photographed within their first 5-10 days of life, because it’s during this period that they’re at their sleepiest. Additionally, babies generally won’t have developed colic, baby acne or cradle cap at this stage. If baby arrives early, we have an extended time frame to work with, whereas if baby arrives late, we’ll need to schedule the session promptly.

Before the session:

Loosen clothing/nappy tabs to avoid lines on the skin appearing in photographs.

Try to keep baby awake for 1-2 hours before you arrive, as for best results, we want a sleepy baby during the session.

During the session:

Newborn sessions generally take a 1- 3 hours

To a large extent, baby determines what happens during the sessions and will probably need top up feeds to ensure a deep sleep. If baby is bottle fed, remember to bring spares

Feel free to bring refreshments, book/iPad/magazines etc. to keep you nourished/occupied while I work with your newborn, as the session may take longer than expected.

The studio, will be heated to approximately 25-30°C, so will feel very warm from the outset. It is therefore advisable to wear layers of clothing that can be easily removed if you get too hot. I always like to include ‘parent shots’ with your newborn, so please bring a black t-shirt and/or white (no logos) to wear for this purpose.

If you would like photos of your newborn with their older sibling(s), please dress them in plain clothes to suit what you are wearing.

I will pose baby prior to each photograph. Not all babies are able to achieve every pose, so if baby appears uncomfortable at any time, we’ll abandon that pose and move on to the next.

Baby will be naked for most shots, but private parts will always be discretely concealed, so never photographed.

Because naked babies are prone to the occasional ‘accident’ during sessions, all wraps, throws, fabrics etc. are freshly laundered before every session and plenty of spares are always to hand
